Yabin Wang is China’s most renowned contemporary dancer and choreographer. She has won numerous gold prizes in Chinese national and regional dance competitions.
In 2009 Yabin started her own studio, Yabin Studio, and has produced a dance performance every year since under the brand name Yabin & Her Friends. Her dance company produces full-length dance programs and commissions choreographers from the US, Europe, and China to create new works of dance. Her extraordinary talent has received praise from critics and artists alike, both as a dancer as well as a choreographer. She has gained a reputation as one of the most promising and pioneering choreographers, dancers, and producers of new contemporary dance in and outside China.
As a dancer, choreographer and producer, she creates productions with an international perspective. Works she created in which she was also principle dancer have won raves from media and audiences around the world. She worked with Sidi Larbi Cherkaou, Tamara Rojo (ENB Artistic Director), Wim Vanderkeybus and more.
Yabin was recognized as “one of the most important dancers in Asia” by Knack Focus. “She has a background in Chinese classical dance but has also worked to bring more contemporary dance to China, and headlines an annual program of creations, Yabin and her Friends… Her performance gives us Chinese and contemporary dance as yin and yang…” by Financial Times.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung commented, “Yabin Wang presented an incredible dance in a soothing rhythm; her flexible, flowing and energetic movements were fascinating.” In 2013 Yabin Studio commissioned Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and production the new piece Genesis生长. In 2014, Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of the English National Ballet invited Yabin Wang to choreograph a dance work for a new production by English National Ballet dedicated to female choreographers entitled She Said. The performance premiered at Sadler’sWells on April 13th, 2016. English National Ballet won Oliver Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for expanding the variety of their repertoire with Akram Khan’s Giselle and She Said. Yabin Wang is one of the choreographers for She Said. She was invited and commissioned to choreograph and dance a solo at the Wondrous Women at the ADF's 85th Anniversary. The same year, she was appointed by French Ambassador along with other artists such as Jia Zhangke, Cui Jian, Sui Jianguo and others as the Ambassadors for promoting French -China Croisements Festival. Also in 2018, she was invited by Tim Supple to be the choreographer and movement designer for NCPA's production of The Tempest. In September 2018, An Individual Soliloquy, a dance drama, choreographed and produced by her had its world premiere in Beijing. In July 2019, Kilden Theatre and Kilden Performing Arts Center in Norway will be performing a large outdoor production of Henrik Ibsen’s famous play The Lady from the Sea in collaboration with Yabin Studio. Yabin was the choreographer and main character, Lady.
