Born in Darwin, Australia, Mitchell was a relative latecomer to the world of dance, finding his way into a high school dance program at the age of 15. He then went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in Perth. Across Australia he worked with companies like Co:3 Dance Company, STRUT Dance and The Farm, as well as independently, performing works by choreographers such as Hofesh Schechter, Crystal Pite, Brooke Leeder and Mitch Harvey, among others. Mitchell has also worked in dance film, featuring in Revelations Film Festival’s These Walls, FourByFour: a 360-degree Virtual Reality film collaboration between Co:3, Tura New Music, and Frame VR/XR:WA, and Structural, choreographed by Brooke Leeder for the Western Australian Museum.
As well as dance, Mitchell has also worked as a photographer, filmmaker, and composer. In his own work, he has great interest in combining these artistic practices and is also inspired by his interest in street dance. Mitchell had his first entirely self-produced dance film, Interstice, selected for Australian Dance Theatre’s Flow: Dance on Screen series, and has also directed, shot, and produced other dance films such as Maybe Days, Point Street, and Catcher, as well as choreographing his own live work, Open Third, for STRUT Dance’s Situ-8 program. In recent years, Mitchell has made the move to Europe, working with companies such as Tanztheater Pforzheim, 2Faced Dance Company, and now Scottish Dance Theatre.
