Joan Clevillé is the Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre, a role he has held since 2019.
Originally from Barcelona, Joan trained in dance at Elise Lummis’ La Companyia while completing a degree in Humanities at Pompeu Fabra University.
He worked internationally for over 17 years as a dancer and rehearsal director with companies including Scottish Dance Theatre, Lost Dog, Dog Kennel Hill Project, Collective Endeavours, the Graz Opera Ballet (Austria), the Choreographic Centre of Valencia, and Ballet Carmen Roche (Madrid). He has taught in professional companies and conservatoires across the UK, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands, and has been commissioned to create new works for tanzmainz (Germany), Thomas Noone Dance (Barcelona) and VERVE (UK).
From 2015 to 2019, he directed his own independent company, Joan Clevillé Dance, presenting work nationally and internationally at platforms such as tanzmesse nrw, British Dance Edition, and Made in Scotland.
As Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre, Joan has created a wide range of stage, outdoor, and digital works. His choreographies have toured across the UK and internationally to India, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Germany. Under his direction, the company has received four nominations at the UK National Dance Awards and was awarded the Classical:NEXT 2021 Innovation Award for these bones, this flesh, this skin.
Joan’s choreographic practice is rooted both in somatic movement research and experimentation with theatre and storytelling, exploring the connection between breath, voice and movement. His work investigates themes of change and uncertainty, and invites audiences to actively engage with their senses, mind and imagination.
Joan is based in Dundee, Scotland, where he lives with his husband.
