Gerard O’Brien describes himself as an artist designer having worked in both fields. His art practice lives between his training in zoology and landscape architecture and his explorations in art both outside institutions and through his formal education in fine art. He has studied, taught and worked in landscape architecture for over twenty years. His last position being at Architecture and Design Scotland.
His practice evolved during his MA (2022-2024) as he turned to video making. He often incorporates drawing in his video work be that scenography, props, costume or the use of animation.
For two years (beginning in 2004) he worked with the community based theatre and art project called “The Conference of Birds” with Floating World Productions. In late 2026 he worked with Scottish Dance Theatre on an element of the “Museum of Futures Legacy Project” with dancer Ben McEwen. For this he created a short video. He saw the process as a “call and response” process where he responded to Ben’s text.
