About Carbon Literacy and Theatre Green Book Training for the Culture Sector

What is it?

In the week of 2nd- 4th October 2024, in a partnership between Creative Carbon Scotland, The Federation of Scottish Theatre, The National Theatre of Scotland, and Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre, we will be launching a new training initiative for the cultural sector’s response to the Climate Crisis.

This will involve hosting Carbon Literacy Training this October (see dates and locations below) with a follow up session next Spring to focus on implementation. As well as Carbon Literacy, the training will also develop confidence in use of the Theatre Green Book.

The intention is to form a lasting network for professional development and change thereafter, creating a mechanism for peer-to-peer support.

Who will lead the work?

The training will be led by Jennifer Taillefer, who has a national and international reputation for work in this field.

Training this October

The first of this two-part programme will focus on Carbon Literacy and take place in person in three locations across Scotland.  All sessions will last from 10.00am - 5.30pm.

Wednesday 2nd October 2024 \\ Eden Court Highlands, Inverness

Thursday 3rd October 2024 \\ Dundee Rep, Dundee

Friday 4th October 2024 \\ NTS Rockvilla, Glasgow

Special thanks to Eden Court Highlands who are partnering with us and providing in-kind venue support.

Two Stages

We are designing this programme to be a two-stage process, with an online day taking place early 2025 (dates to be agreed) to focus on implementing Carbon Literacy in our theatre and dance practice using the tool of the Theatre Green Book.

These facilitated online sessions will be for anyone who has completed their Carbon Literacy training and would like to connect with others to share the wins and challenges of making their action pledges a reality and working with Theatre Green Book.

The content of the Spring sessions will be tailored to the participants through a pre-session questionnaire, to empower you to move forward with your actions, embed the learning into your organisations, and communicate your plans and goals to your colleagues, audiences, and funders.

Together we will create a list of resources you can use to further your environmental journey, discuss the best practices that have worked, and get inspiration and support from each other on the path to create theatre which does not damage the planet. You will leave inspired and empowered to take the next steps in your environmental journey.

We intend to create hub locations for people to join the online training if they wish to have in person contact with their peers. Details will follow.

Payment Structure / Booking Process / Access Requirements

Partners are supporting this work with core support, but this training will only be viable with contributions for places paid for by organisations. We have designed a payment structure that reflects the size of organisations and includes a Pay it Forward aspect so that we might be able to facilitate places at no cost for freelancers. The fee structure below secures a place for both stages of the process. Places for each level will be limited to ensure viability.

Large organisation (40+ FTE) - Pay it forward £200 \\ Standard £150
Medium organisation (15+ FTE) - Pay it forward £150 \\ Standard £100
Small organisation (0-15 FTE) - Pay it forward £100 \\ Standard £60 - SOLD OUT
Freelancer - Free - SOLD OUT

Booking for all locations will be through the Dundee Rep Theatre box office. We are committed to finding ways to facilitate access requirements for participants and you will be asked to indicate any as part of the booking process.

All sessions will also follow Creative Carbon Scotland’s Safe Working Statement.
