Alex is a New Zealand-born, Scotland-based actor and award-winning playwright. In 2019, she trained at The John Bolton Theatre School and since then has acted in TVNZ’s ‘The Doghouse’, Gaslamp Theatre’s ‘Macbeth’ and GLORIANA’s ‘The Maid’s Tragedy’.
She writes plays about women in disastrous situations. In 2024, her play Becoming Jeff Bezos won Playmarket New Zealand’s b425 Award and was also long-listed for A Play, A Pie and A Pint’s David MacLennan award. She went on to write We’re Gonna Kill Billy which won the 2025 Adam New Zealand Play Award for Best Play, Best Play by a Māori Playwright, and Best Play by a Woman. Alex is currently the youngest person to have won the Adam Award in its 18 year history. In the UK, We’re Gonna Kill Billy was shortlisted for The Woman’s Prize for Playwriting, making the top 20 plays out of 1,275 submissions. It was also shortlisted for The Alpine Fellowship Theatre Award, and long-listed for The Bruntwood Prize, making the top 100 plays from 2,103 submissions. We’re Gonna Kill Billy has been programmed as part of The Royal Court Theatre’s Open Submission Festival and will receive a rehearsed reading performed at The Royal Court Theatre in early April.
Her most recent play, King of the Scouts, is being developed with Silo Theatre in New Zealand and was a recipient of the AIR Literature Västra Götaland residency to develop the play in Sweden through November 2025. Alex is also one of the founding members of Half Trick Theatre, which is dedicated to staging irreverent reinventions of untouchable classics.
